Back to School in Central Florida: What Families Need to Know This Year
As summer winds down and the excitement of a new school year builds, families across Central Florida are gearing up for another busy back-to-school season. Whether your kids are heading into kindergarten, middle school, or their senior year of high school, here’s what you need to know to start the year off right.
Most Central Florida school districts, including Polk, Highlands, and Lake Counties, will begin classes in early to mid-August. Be sure to check your local school district’s website for updated calendars, open house events, and back-to-school nights.
Florida's Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday runs from July 29 through August 11, 2025. It’s the perfect time to stock up on essentials like:
Notebooks and backpacks
Pens, pencils, and calculators
Clothing and shoes (under $100 per item)
Computers and accessories (under $1,500 for personal use)
Many local stores and small businesses are also offering special deals during this time—so be sure to shop local!
With school buses back on the roads, drivers should be extra cautious around school zones. If your child rides the bus, review the safety rules and make sure they know their route and pickup times. Walking or biking? Practice the safest path together before the first day.
Many Central Florida schools participate in free or reduced lunch programs. Check with your school’s front office or website to fill out applications early. Don’t forget to update any required medical forms, including immunizations, allergy alerts, and medications.
The transition back to school can bring a mix of excitement and anxiety for both students and parents. Open up conversations at home about how your child is feeling. Most districts now offer resources like school counselors and mental health support services.
From book fairs and library programs to sports tryouts and STEM clubs, Central Florida offers a wide range of extracurriculars. Keep an eye on your city’s event calendar on Central Florida Cities to discover local happenings near you.
Wishing all of our Central Florida students, teachers, and families a successful and safe school year!
